What you will need:

• The Pegboard
• Studfinder
• Framework for Pegboard you are using – how much depends on the size of the board. This will probably consist of 1 x 1s. At least four long ones for the outside portion of the frame and four to eight for the middle support.
• Wood screws for the framework.
• Jigsaw to cut the pegboard to size, unless you wish to use the table saw for this as well.
• Hand saw or table saw for cutting the 1 x 1s.

• Screwdriver for the wood screws.
• Lots of pegs to hold the tools.

Step One:

Decide whether or not you wish to build a framework. Some guys will give a resounding yes, others no. Plus, it will give enough space behind the pegboard to be able to fit in pegs that will actually be holding the tools. If you choose to pass on this, go on to the next step.

Figure out where the studs are. You wish to put the vertical portions of the framework along the studs. Tools can be heavy, so you need to have strength backing it. Once you find a few, lightly draw lines vertically along them. Then step back and figure out which ones you want to use for the support. Placing the board against the wall will help determine.

Cut the wood for the frame using a hand saw or table saw. Be sure to use the studs to the maximum. For best results, put in only a couple of the screws per 1 x 1, so you can make sure it is where you want it and will fit the pegboard. Place a vertical 1 x 1 along a stud. Horizontal frame work will go along the top and bottom. At each end, another vertical will be holding the outside of the pegboard.

Once you have the frame completely in place step back again to make sure it is where you want it. If not readjust it. Now is the time.

If you like the location, add several more screws to help keep it all in place.

Note: As you are going along, make sure the pegboard is going to fit on the frame.

Step Three:

Cut the pegboard to size using your preferred saw. Place the board onto the framework and put a screw on each corner to begin.

Step back (yes, again!) and check to make sure it is what you want. Yes? Continue adding screws for support along the entire frame underneath the pegboard.

Step Four:

This next step may take a while. Put up some pegs and begin adding the tools you wish to hang. Be realistic, start with the most commonly used tools first, such as hammers, screwdrivers, spanners, etc.

If you wish to get really creative, once you have found the final resting place, make little drawings of the tools where they hang, so when you take a few of them off at once, you can easily add them back. It wouldn’t do for you to take as much time returning the tools as it would have to find them in a few drawers.
